why is plastic surgery becoming so common?

being teased about the way you look may end you up in a cosmetic surgeon's room.People mostly go for plastic surgery in response to appearance based rejection.Research has proven that men and women who feel sensitive to appearance based rejection are more likely to end up in a cosmetic surgeons room than those who are less sensitive to appearance. This effect is particularly true when people recall negative comments regarding their appearance.

in my opinion, just because people aren't excepting you for the way you look, doesn't mean you start hating yourself and opt for drastic measures that permanently change the way you look.

instead you should work more towards your confidence, and forget what other people are saying about you. if someone's with you because of the way you look and not because of who you are than that person surely can't be worth the company right?

  1. Plastic surgeries are always due to self esteem problems. For most black men even people like michael jackson it was more of them being forced towards it due to racism. Plastic surgeries are helpful for those with disfigured faces due accidents or diseases. Government agencies use plastic surgeries for spies and agents who they want to disguise completely, so there is no single reason for plastic surgeries. Plastic surgeries have become a fetish for most people, trying to figure out and innovative ways to change their looks, they call it being different, others might just call them insane! some even do it out of obsessions like trying to copy the looks of a celebrity! People have gotten their faces done like, J-Lo, Angelina Jolie, Cleopatra!

  2. Teenage women (those under 18 years old) account for about 2-3% of all patients presenting to plastic surgeons offices to discuss cosmetic surgery. Personally, I have seen an increase in both inquiries as well as consultations by teenage patients. Some of the more common reasons young women present for cosmetic surgery is for breast augmentation, liposuction, and rhinoplasty. This is controversial. The issues involved include; maturity, decision making ability, safety and legal aspects.

  3. Maturity and Judgement

There are several good reasons that age restrictions have been placed on all sorts of things that require maturity and judgement such as purchasing a gun, driving and drinking alcohol. The frontal lobe of the brain does not fully develop until the 20?s to 30?s. This portion of the brain controls decision making, impulsiveness and understanding consequences. There have been studies to suggest that 20-30% of high school students consider suicide. This is also a period with a high incidence of experimentation with illicit drugs. Clearly, adolescence is a period of time where judgement can be challenged. This is not to say that adults always make proper decisions for themselves, adolescents are simply at a distinct biologic disadvantage.

  4. Cosmetic surgery: Coming back for more
It is a lot easier to apply and undergo cosmetic surgery nowadays than it was ten years ago and as the prices of cosmetic procedures have dropped significantly (and some procedures are paid for by health care insurers) and it is possible to go abroad for even cheaper procedures, more people than ever before are undergoing this type of treatment.

Changing your looks is more normal than ever and with this fact a new and modern problem has surfaced. Surgeons and cosmetic surgery specialists are starting to see more patients every year. The slightly disconcerting thing about this is that more and more patients are returning for more. Especially women often seem tempted to have more surgery done after they went to a surgeon for their first procedure. Our present day society has accepted the fact that we can change the way we look and in most cases, sadly, this means that people are insecure and want to change the way they are completely.

Is there a responsibility in this for surgeons or should they do whatever a client wants them to do as long as they pay? It's a fact that, if one surgeon refuses to perform a certain procedure on someone who ha undergone numerous other cosmetic procedures, the client can easily go and see another surgeon to get their way. Reports of the American Society Of Plastic Surgeons show that more and more men are also signing up for cosmetic procedures nowadays. Since 2000 44% more men than ever before have applied for a cosmetic procedure.

  5. http://www.cosmeticplasticsurgerystatistics.com/statistics.html

NEW YORK, NY (February 25, 2008) – Nearly 11.7 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2007, according to statistics released today by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The Aesthetic Society, which has been collecting multi-specialty procedural statistics since 1997 says the overall number of cosmetic procedures has increased 457 percent since the collection of the statistics first began. The most frequently performed procedure was Botox injections and the most popular surgical procedure was liposuction.

"Our statistics confirm that aesthetic plastic surgery is not defined by race or gender," said Aesthetic Society president Foad Nahai, MD. "The number of surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed on men increased 17 percent since last year, and 22 percent of the aesthetic procedures were performed on traditional racial and ethnic minorities."

  7. While some people who decide to undergo the knife may already look great, there are many others who have been teased and taunted their entire life about their features. Not only do years of teasing and taunting take their toll on a person's emotional well being, but a person who does not like something about themselves will also cause an emotional scar. Since who we are has a lot to do with our emotions, then it is safe to say that even the smallest procedure that effects our self esteem in a positive manor can outwardly make you seen as a whole new person. Isn't it what it is all about, changing ourselves so not only we look better, but feel better as well?

The obvious risks associated with plastic surgery are the possibilities of not only having a complication, but also receiving bad work. No wants to pay a substantial amount of money to end up looking worse than before they went in for the procedure. On top of this, there is also no one who wants to pay to have a procedure dine just so they can have nerves damaged.

  8. To be honest peterous has a valid point, but the only way we can connect what he said about the plastic surgeries and their growing trends among TEENS is people getting scared and stop getting plastc surgeries <--- Sorry for the sarcasm... Brother, why plastic surgery is increasing is another issue, but the rate at which it is increasing is the bigger issue, if it keeps increasing like Joseph above mentioned, will we ever know what some really looks like?

  9. i agree with yahya...sure u need to be socially accepted by the people. but shudnt u make a point that they accept for who or what u are? instead of being a plastic doll that is forever trapped in the constant struggle of insecurity???....plastic surgery has become more of a fashion trend...i saw this on fox news....in a country either it was china or korea...Looks are so important for getin a job...most of them wont hire u kjust because you dont have the perfect looks. the absurd thing is youn graduates actually go through plastic surgery to make themselves moe beautiful. Its not entirely fault of people putting themselves under the knife but society themselves are forcing them to go thru this painful procedure!
